The Media Fields research collective formed at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2007 to advance scholarship on the spatial aspects of a range of media forms, including film, television, radio, and digital media.

In 2010, we launched an online journal, Media Fields Journal: Critical Explorations in Media and Space.

Our third conference, Contested Territories, will be held at UCSB on March 31 and April 1, 2011. The conference will feature:

  • a keynote presentation by Charles Acland, professor and Concordia University Research Chair in Communication Studies, author of Screen Traffic: Movies, Multiplexes, and Global Culture (Duke University Press, 2003), and editor of Residual Media (University of Minnesota Press, 2007)
  • a screening of 9 Star Hotel (2007) and Q&A with director Ido Haar
